North County students continue to be a bit healthier than other students across the state, according to physical fitness test results released Thursday.
Statewide, about a third of Cheap P90X the participating students passed the tests for all six fitness areas, data from the California Department of Education shows. Locally, most districts bested that average.
The fitness tests are given each year to public school students in fifth, seventh and ninth grades. The results released Thursday were for the 2009-10 school year.
Only Escondido Union, Oceanside Unified, San Pasqual Union, Solana Beach, and Vallecitos school districts were below the state average.
Across San Diego County, the average number of students passing all six criteria rose 1 percentage point this year to 38 percent.
The North County districts with the highest percentage of healthy kids were those in wealthier areas —- including Rancho Santa Fe, with 67 percent passing; San Dieguito Union High, with 63 percent; Del Mar Union, with 62 percent; and Poway Unified with 60 percent.
On the other end were the tiny Vallecitos district, with 21 percent of students passing all six tests; Escondido Union, with 28 percent; and Oceanside Unified, with 29 percent.
Data was not available for the Carlsbad Unified School District.
The tests —- which include exercises such as modified push-ups and sit-ups —- assess aerobic capability, body composition, strength, flexibility and endurance. In order to pass, a 15-year-old boy needs to do at least 16 push-ups, 24 sit-ups and be able to run a mile within 9 minutes, among other things. For girls and younger students, the goals are lower.
Schools started administering physical fitness tests in 1976. They are now required by state law.
State schools Superintendent Tom Torlakson said Thursday that he plans to start a statewide campaign aimed at getting school kids more active.
“Nothing is more important than the health of our children,” he said in a prepared statement, “and today’s results show that many of them need a helping hand to get fit and stay in shape.”
The initiative will help students adopt healthy habits and could lead to more success in the classroom, he said.
Over the last several years, schools have worked to change lunch menus and remove sugary snacks as a way to combat a growing obesity problem among the nation’s children.
Across the state, nearly 12,000 of the 1.3 million students tested couldn’t meet any of the six targets, according to the data. In San Diego County, 1,513 out of more than 100,000 students failed all six tests.
These numbers are substantial improvements over last year’s numbers, when more than 23,000 students across the state and nearly 4,000 from San Diego County failed the tests.
